What happens when a first responder scans the tenderID

What first responders see when they scan a tenderID, and the automatic alert your family receives.

Here's exactly what happens the moment a first responder scans a tenderID QR code.

From the first responder's perspective

  1. The responder opens their phone's camera (or any QR code scanner).

  2. They point it at the QR code on the fridge decal or wallet card.

  3. A secure web page opens instantly in their browser. No app download needed.

  4. The page displays your loved one's:

    • Current medications

    • Allergies

    • Medical conditions

    • Important documents (like a DNR or advance directive)

    • Other information you've chosen to share

  5. The responder can read and act on this information immediately.

This takes seconds, which can make a critical difference in an emergency.

What family members receive

At the same moment the QR code is scanned, every emergency contact linked to the tenderID receives an automatic text message alert. The message notifies them that the tenderID was scanned, letting them know something may be happening.

This means you'll be informed immediately, even if you're across the country.

Does the first responder need the tendercare app?

No. The QR code opens a web page that works in any smartphone browser. There's no login, no app, and no extra steps for the responder.

Does it work without cell service?

The QR code requires an internet connection to load the information page. In areas with no cell service, the QR code may not load. This is a known limitation. In remote or low-signal areas, consider also providing a printed summary of key medical information.

How long does the scan page stay accessible?

For security, the page that opens when a QR code is scanned expires after 24 hours. Each new scan generates a fresh, time-limited link.
